Never-ending

This I know, I have
felt it before. Much like
a storm brewing on the
horizon, or the ache of
aging bones announcing
a fast approaching cold,
this bitterness-of-breath,
snail-crawling through
my chest, that leaves
within it’s wake, no
chance mistake to
believe it could ever be
anything else,
than a dream... dying.
I have bear-trapped
you to me for long
enough to know that
it is time to let you go.
Solomon like, I realize
that I can not help you.
I can not change you.
I can not fix you, for
you are beyond me.
You will never be
road worthy enough
to travel upon the
path I am to take, and
the dream... is dying.
I will lie as I release
you, that… I did not
do before. No, I will
not claim you as mine.
This time… this time,
you will be abandoned
by another. I will have
to state, as they take
you away, that you
were not my heart’s
desire, my inner fire,
and a part of me will
retire… with you, as
this dream... lies dying.
Before you go, I wish
you to know, that even
though we failed to go
the distance, you fed
the flames, and the
passion burns on. I
will realize my dream
one day and you will
have played a part.
Perhaps it did not
start with you, but it
will not end there either.
This dream is a Phoenix,
and from your ashes,
it is born again.

What a wonder filled flow of language and insight as this piece straddles Eternity & Infinity. In ancient Greek and Egyptian mythology, the phoenix is a mythical bird and associated with the Egyptian sun-god Ra and the Greek Phobos (son of Apollo). According to the Greeks the bird lives in Arabia, nearby a cool well. Each morning at dawn, it would bathe in the water and sing such a beautiful song, that the sun-god stops his chariot to listen. There exists only one phoenix at the time.
When it felt its death approaching it would build a nest of aromatic wood and set it on fire, and was consumed by the flames. When it was burned, a new phoenix sprang forth from the pyre. It then embalmed the ashes of its predecessor in an egg of myrrh and flew with it to Heliopolis ("city of the sun"). There it would deposit the egg on the altar of the sun god.
In Egypt it is often depicted as a heron, but in the classic literature as a peacock, or an eagle. The phoenix symbolizes immortality, resurrection, and life after death. In that aspect it was often placed on sarcophagi. It is associated with the Egyptian Benu, the Garuda of the Hindus, and the Chinese Feng-huang.
Judaic lore mentions that the phoenix achieved its unique status as an immortal bird because it refrained from bothering the overburdened Noah during the Flood voyage
I loved your conclusion:
"...This dream is a Phoenix,
and from your ashes,
it is born again."

Peace

Okay, my friend ... I have read this over again and again and the pain I find
within it is suffocating, at best. Each line, each word, each syllable feasts
upon my very soul. I know you shared the inspiration for this with me, but
truly this could have so many meanings really. I think each reader will
come away with something different. Something very close and personal
to them.
The opening stanza really sets the stage for the brilliant metaphors, (if we are
NOT to take it at face value) and descriptions that follow. Hun ... they are spectacular.
Finding the strength to let go when you know you should, but your heart is screaming
"no", is probably one of the toughest challenges we, as humans, face.
A dying dream .. a very hard reality to bear. Would that no one should ever have
to face that. What we wouldn't do, eh? Like AJ, I too, loved the Phoenix reference.
Completely wonderful, snazz .. in the way only YOU can do. The title is perfection.
*hugs*
~Breezy
(p.s. just wanted to say, also, your optimism is impressive and admirable hun) |

Wow, I coma away from this(after reading it twice...I couldn't help it...it was that good!) of such love and respect.
The difficulty of not only letting something, but recognizing the need to let it go.........wow! |

Scott,
Man I am the last person on earth to assume anything about what a poem says. Sure I have my own interpretations but that does not mean my interpretation is correct. So I will steer away from assumptions here.
This is a powerful write my friend but as with any write coming from seemingly as sad area there is a person behind it. So this does sadden me, but perhaps there is nothing to be sad about. In a sense you seem to have a slight triumph in how you ended it, so maybe I am concerned for no reason.
All in all my friend this was a wonderful write, despite it's potential sad message. You as always got me with the opening line and I was carried to the end with poetic ease.
BRAVO and my prayers are with you.

Okay so I read this again and immediately I now believe that this whole piece is not tragic at all but in fact is a freedom from something which restrains. So now I feel like an idiot and still think this was brilliant. Or am I wrong now? |

Naz,
Well, this poem presents as a challange as there seem to be numerous possibilities. My reaction is to ralate how I deal with dreams. My tendency is to attempt to encapsolate a dream, to capture it and then try to control it. I have a difficult time letting go of a dream that is "dying". I seem to want to ressurrect the dream rather then let it go. In terms of a relationship, or poetry, I aspire to reach a level better then I am and see if I can reach it.
Well so much for understanding your poem, but is sure provoked a response.
