The Slayer's Penitence

Contributed by maelstroms_child on Sunday, 11th March 2007 @ 11:24:15 AM in AEST
Topic: StoryPoetry

Locked in stasis - running hard but going nowhere.
Buildings around me, staring down,
gloating through the lights,
mocking me with stature.
Towering above me, screaming accusations.

Out of breath, no hope of escape.
All around me is chaos,
and it's moving too fast.
There's no shelter in the shadows.
No hope of salvation.
They glare at me,
beams of light, knowing fingers.

Pointing at me.

They know.

I see their laughter,
hidden behind yellow shades.
My dark truth in transit.

Neon signs flash, reflecting off windows.
Instilling the knowledge of my deeds,
enlightening the stones.

Everything encircles me,
An interrogating spiral.
A maelstrom of guilt rends my soul.
I drop to one knee, stagnant.
Bleeding cries of reproach fill my ears.

I must escape.

Here at my lowest, I find absolution.
Darkness clouds my mind.

Voices call to me, enticing.
They deafen my ears to screams.
A freedom from my crimes upon man.

An escape from pain and regret.
They cleanse my rotten core.
I lie me down, and
before the feet of man made gods,
I offer a penance in blood.

A sacrifice, become I to this city.
My animosity produces a malodorous air.
Eating away the ground before me.

From inside i begin to burn,
The air I breathe turns to flame
Blood fountains from my pores,
and I stare deep into the resulting pool.
Seeing countless faces, contorted in torment.

As the faces fade,
and in my final moments.
I recognise the abomination.

Staring up at me,
with eyes suffused with with malice,
werefrom waves of sufferance emenate,
a face with malignance and malevolence imbued.

As I look into the vision,
and I take my last breath.
I have my final epiphany.
The monster there before me
is not what it seems.
I look upon it's countenance,
and see the reflection of a God.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
