Silly little Annabelle
Had a secret, wouldn’t tell,
Did not know what she would say,
When the voices came today,
Tired of all the strange night dreams,
Waking to her frightening screams.
She couldn’t tell a soul.
No one else would turn their head,
They couldn’t see the poisoned bread,
The laughter with it’s wicked shrill,
The hiding of the Doctors pill,
The faces popping in to view,
They ran from her, what could she do?
She couldn’t tell a soul.
It finally made her hide away,
In places she found safe to stay.
No food would pass her hungered lips,
She lived in chains, fear that grips.
She couldn’t tell a soul.
They buried Annabelle today,
The voices never went away.
The fear she felt tore her to shreds.
The tattered heart, discarded meds.
She couldn’t tell a soul

This is a wonderful poem, I love the vivid images in the second stanza. Thank you for writing this poem on a topic so little covered, most poems about mental illness seem to be about depression, bi-polar that sort of thing and its interesting to see your point of view from having worked with people suffering from schizophrenia.
Great work,
Dom |

I like that word "awesome" that another commenter used. I would also like to add insightful and heart gripping. Very well done.

In this piece I feel how 'Life' is fragile and how one can 'lose their life' amid the twists of being, secrets and things unspoken. This piece makes up the difference of the that which we cannot understand bringing a glimpse of an 'all too common' occurrence. In part perhaps as science is still burgeoning to address such conditions which stem from deep in our biological history.
Wow you got me thinking on this one...
Excellent
Peace

ND .. I know you posted this as fictional, but I know someone who
suffers from this and it's so painful to stand by and not be able to
offer any help. He is such an incredibly intelligent, compassionate
and sweet soul. It hurts to witness his fear and doubt ..
I wish we could understand more about how the human mind works
and that the taboos of society would let go of the chains that hold
poor souls like Annabelle captive .. suffering in silence ~
This was an excellent post, hun. Thanks for sharing it ..
