The Minstrel is Leaving

Contributed by Terry_Stephen_Driscoll on Saturday, 22nd February 2003 @ 12:00:00 PM in AEST
Topic: dedicatedpoems

Have you heard the minstrel’s laugh?
His old friends sleep in photographs
Reminiscent ponderings,
Of smoky rooms and guitar kings.

Have you seen the minstrel cry?
As melodies refuse to die
While yesterdays discordant ghosts
Drone their tuneless victory toasts,

Have you held the minstrel’s hand?
That led one time a merry band
Where wood and steel made vibrant bond
As friendships one by one abscond

And of the love the minstrel plays?
In tuneful, sweet, harmonic ways
An opera called divinity
That only purest hearts can see

Have you watched the minstrel fight?
For all he was, with all his might
The bottle and the bottleneck
Like violent tides upon a wreck

Someone fetch the minstrel’s hat
For time enough this place he’s sat
Where critics picked away his vim
And plucked his very soul from him

The minstrel packed his bag of things
Plectrums, capos, snaps and strings
A favourite book, a talisman
The simple needs of music men

As dust disturbed by sturdy stride
Attempted not his trail to hide
A wandering the minstrel knew
Would lead him to the end of blue

Can you see the minstrel now?
Among the birds and apple bows
His road is now an avenue
As trees grow flavoured blossom new

Barley fields sway to and fro
As skies place perfect cloud on show
With songs of joy and dreams to play
The day the minstrel walked away.

Your work was mentioned to me by a friend we have in common. I must admit this is the first of your poems I've read and find it to be a talented, well written piece.

The feeling I get from this piece is that the minstrel has shared his songs and has found that it is time to set out, experience life and write something new. It gives me the feeling of moving on and of peaceful journeys.

Keep up the good work and Lia thanks for the tip.
