The Storm

Contributed by PlatinumP on Wednesday, 7th February 2007 @ 09:31:41 AM in AEST
Topic: AmericanTragedy

The oceans move violently, as the rain starts falling
Mother nature starts to cry out, yet no one hears her calling
Slowly she twists and turns, to create such a storm
That soon to the land of America, will cause great harm
She's given birth to a monster, we'll soon give it a name
Oh if we only knew the damage we'd see, once Katrina came
A normal night we're chilling, me and these friends of mine
I never could have guessed, that this would be the last time
They tell me of a storm, that's been coming oh so near
To our great city of New Orleans, but it doesn't inflict the fear
This isn't the first time, that we've faced such a threat
Of a storm like this so close, but they aren't sure yet
They tell us we should leave, to evacuate our towns
That once this storm passes, nothing will be around
This can't be true can it? Could they really be serious?
Could this storm be this strong to put such fear in us?
I don't want to leave my home, reluctantly I pack my things
Just in case it's really true, who knows what tomorrow brings
As we approach the highways, the whole city is in flee
We'll be home the next day, at least that's what I believe
Hours later we arrive, and at this house I check the news
In an attempt to see this storm, that mother nature has brewed
It's bigger than expected, now we're all getting nervous
Will our city still be there? We really didn't deserve this
At night I lay my head, close my eyes and go to sleep
Awakened early in the morning, a tree falling startles me
As I sit in this house, the storm's showing its first signs
That this disastrous Katrina is here, I let out a big sigh
She's passing right over us, it's the most deadliest storm
Oh why'd the day have to come, that Katrina was born?
We've lost all power now, but her wraths still not stopping
In the dark we all just sit here, only waiting and watching
Will this horror be over soon? None of us can really know
We hear them on the radio, there's a chance of tornado's
They say she's almost over, now I'm wondering what's left
Of this city I onced lived, has she taken her last breath?
Finally the sun comes out, this horrid storm is finally gone
Nobody could have known, the damage was far from done
We're told it's not that bad though, our city is still in tact
They begin to rescue survivors, and we prepare to go back
Suddenly the canal breaks open, the water begins to flow
Throughout our entire city, the damage slowly grows
And as the water rises higher, it starts to destroy all
Who will be there now, to hear our desperate calls?
Hour by hour now, the body count begins to rise
Through these city streets, can be heard the dreadful cries
As the nation lends a hand, sends it's people to our aid
People are looting stores, shooting at those trying to save
At this house where I stay, there is no power and no water
Forced to sleep in the streets now, as I witness Katrina's slaughter
The citizens of New Orleans, have lost everything that we've had
Children rome the city streets, without their mom and dad
Dead bodies floating in the river, until now this has been unseen
Nobody on this planet earth, has ever seen such a thing
The peoples cries are heard, yet help has not arrived
Something so treaturous here, where happiness once thrived
People are separated from their families, nobody can get in touch
If only I could find my loved ones, maybe this wouldn't hurt so much
It's not a pleasant feeling, not knowing if they're safe
Oh God please let my family and friends, be alive today
A growing city of millions, once a well traveled place
Now only remains a ghost-land, full of death and waste
Will we ever go home? Will things ever be the same?
From this point on, our whole lives have changed
Most of my friends I'll never see, and my family I may not
The same goes for everyone, forced to evacuate this spot
It's been weeks since it's happened, things still not what they were
Can somebody please tell me, why'd this have to occur?
As a nation's here to comfort us, all we can do is mourn
And pray to God to return us, to the calm before the storm

oh my!! this is a beautifully written poem. you brought the whole ordeal to life again with your vivid expression. i felt like this had just happened. i can not imagine what this must have been like. I do think God was trying to wake the world up for something though. my thoughts and prayers are with you that you may soon find peace and closure.

A solid pillar to cling to in times of trouble. Alongside Katrina (a girl so named that I had a crush on when I was a kid left me so devastated which now feels humbly small in comparison to this storms destruction) this applies to the Tsunami victims and anyone so encumbered. A powerful prayer revealing the depths it has so effected and so many questions left unanswered.

A Thousand Blessing

Peace
