Pray don’t cry, child –
When darkness falls,
And the monsters who live with you
Sleep.
Still alone
As you walk the silent chapters of
Your world.
To lock yourself away
Into your keep.
Lovers, best friends, parents,
They all left
You fighting solo for life –
In drowning tank
Unfathomably deep.
Never sorrows piled so high,
Yet kind courage lets you give
A smile for all the little things
The light hours of the next day reap.
Even as those waters rise,
Pray don’t cry, child,
Do not weep.

You’ve intertwined what seems
to be a wandering hero with a
troubled child. This is a very creative
move, making the character in your
poem seem brave rather than meek
and submissive. As a reader, I feel empathy
with the character with out pitying him/her.
I love the advice you give your friend, it is
very touching. The person in this poem must be very proud to have such a gifted friend. Great write!
