I was born in the Midwest,
Raised in the sun.
Moved to the snow.
Momma, always on the run.
Daddy what? Daddy who?
No one really cared.
Mommas all we needed,
And she was always there.
Livin like gypsies;
My Brother, Her, and Me.
She was keepin up the bills
For the cable, lights, and heat.
Not even once did we fight
Momma, Bro, and Me.
She always kept our lives
In perfect harmony.
She stood on every stamp line
In the muggy Orlando heat
To make sure that we always
Had enough to eat.
She gave us all we needed
And never missed a beat
Momma never told us
We were in poverty.
We lived how children should
Innocent and pure.
Never knowing way too much
And Momma made that sure.
Years and years did pass
And Momma got a man.
Me and Brother got a new Daddy
With a business on his hands.
Finally in a house
But Daddy's never home.
It was the three of us again
But We never felt alone.
Daddy couldn't stop
Just working more and more
So Momma packed a U-Haul
And drove her kids up to New York.
Daddy really loved us
So he did just this;
Packed his bags into his Datson
And sold his business.
All together in New York
Us four for just a while.
Until Momma got her tubes untied
And had another child.
I was only ten
My brother only twelve
My Momma was excited
To have another girl.
Five of us together
For years, months, days
Until brother went to college
Just too far away.
I am thankful for these humble years
And how my life was led
Now I’m the next to leave the nest
And keep my own self fed.
But Momma tought me everything
That I may need to know.
She kept away the bad
And allowed us all to grow.
