Once in Hacienda’s library, Father Cheliso and Jose listened to Miguel speak.
“The child is illegitimate that should have died at birth. He is living only because Jose talked me into sparing his life. That was my first mistake.”
Father Cheliso spoke. “ He is your flesh and blood, Miguel.”
:He is an illegitimate with a yanqui father.”
“He is a human being created in God’s image.”
“He is worthless, priest. I want no part of him.”
Father Cheliso spoke a sudden Latin phrase.
“Ullum nolite vocare nequam
pro ut Christus mortuus sit.”
Miguel looked at the Catholic priest not understanding the words at all. They seemed out of place. “Meaning?”
Prefacing the translation, Father Cheliso spoke. “There was a certain wandering scholar of the middle ages named Muretus. He was poor. He took sick in an Italian town and was taken to a hospital for the destitute. The doctors were talking about his case in Latin not knowing he understood. They suggested that since he was such a poor worthless wanderer they might use him for medical experiments. He look up at them and answered in their learned tongue.
“Ullum nolite vocare nequam
pro utChristus mortuus sit.”
The phrase can be translated” Do not call anyone useless for whom Christ died. Or, do not call Edwardo useless for whom Christ died.”
“There will always be enmity between the illegitimate and me.”
“The child is innocent. Margarita and her lover are culpable but not Edwardo. Margarita has suffered enough for her sin. Why compound this problem with intransigence? Margarita’s forgiveness and Edwards’s acceptance will give this family peace.”
“There’s a price to be paid. That yanqui who tainted our blood must pay his penalty.”
“ Let him pay his penalty by marrying Margarita and rearing their son. In such a way, your daughter will be happy and Edwardo will have his real father.”
“ My daughter will marry Don Huerra!”
“Your harsh attitude prevents me, in good conscience, from being part of that ceremony.”
“What have you done, Jose” Your loose tongue has cause all this trouble.”
“ My tongue has not caused trouble, Miguel. It has cause an opportunity to make right the problem we face.”
“I am making it right with Margarita’s marriage to Don Huerra.”
Father Cheliso asked Miguel a question. “ Does Don Huerra know about Edwardo?”
Miguel didn’t like the priest’s question. He sought escape through evasiveness “ How should I know? He has many informants. It is possible.”
Father Cheliso didn’t let him off so easily. “ You have not told him yourself? You expect him to marry your daughter without knowing she has a son? As far as that goes, I do not believe you have told Margarita either. I believe you have kept this information from her.”
“Jose! What else have you told this priest?”
“Only that the boy lives in Mexico City with Sandervol and his wife.”
Miguel looked disgusted. “You amaze me, brother. Sometimes you can not speak at all and other times you can not stop talking. I wish to God you could speak a little more to women and a little less to men.”
“ I did right this time.”
“That is a matter of opinion that I do not agree with. And you, priest, what do you plan to do with this information?”
“Nothing, Miguel. It is for you or Jose to tell Margarita that she has a living son. Later, if you have not told her after a decent length of time, I will be forced to.”
Miguel hated Father Cheliso’s position, but there was little he could do about it. He gave final words. “If you will not marry her, I will settle for silence.”
Jose spoke to his brother. “Father Cheliso can withhold this information for a time, but I will not.”
:” You brother? I do not think you have the “agallas” to even think seriously about opening your mouth to Margarita.”
