I am not the greatest mother and never professed to be
But I raised my kids to the best of my ability
I smothered them with love, because I wanted them to know
The difference between real love, and loves that’s for show
I wanted more for them than I had in my life
I wanted to fast-forward the struggle and strife
I wanted to not have to answer why daddy is gone
I wanted to keep from saying he was too weak to be strong
I wanted to save them the disappointment of fake family and friends
I wanted to protect them from the heartache of first love when it ends
I wanted to give them the best things money could buy
I wanted to save them from bad dreams that made them cry
I wanted to shield them from the racism we live in today
I want them to know they can make a difference in a big way
I want them to know they were born to do great things
I want them to never stop hoping and believing in their dreams
and to know that no mater how sad or hard life may be
that those times, or just stepping-stone’s to their destiny
