A Surprise Breakfast

Contributed by amoamare on Wednesday, 24th January 2007 @ 11:39:32 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

She once told me that Death
isn't just a pleasant awakening from a nightmare.
It would be like sitting up straight and abruptly upon hearing a gunshot,
so quickly that you hit your head on a ceiling beam,
recovering to the bittersweet smell of coffee with cream,
the sound of bacon sizzling in a pan in the kitchen.
And you would inhale that scent,
let it slide through the roots of your hair and soak into your bones.
And you would follow the sound of the sizzling oil,
The crescendo as you patter down the stairs.
But upon arrival there would be no kitchen, no coffee, no bacon,
in fact, neither mug nor frying pan;
only The Heat,
The Heat that warms and prepares the source of your arrival.
