The Beguiled Friends

Nostalgic

When I was a quite lad,
And unaware to the tricks of world,
At clear sunny spring noons,
Alongwith two fluffy baby goats,
I would go to walk all around.
While passing through the fields,
Of wheat green, lush green all round,
Mixed with yellow blooming mustard,
Where the flying insects hovered upon
The life imparting source,
To suck the essence of life.
Amid the tall high swaying crops,
I hid myself to mock the innocence.
The baby goats felt panic unease,
To see their master vanished at once.
They running about sought me in trouble,
And very soon became out of breath.
I felt pity at being them tantalized.
Then I would show myself at large,
They came gliding, jumping to me,
With fat impatiens heart beat,
And restless frolic movements,
As a lost child becomes impatient glad.
On finding the worried parents.
Then caressing them took in my arms,
To console the troubled friends.
And begged forgiveness for mocking mischief.
I said to them, “It is just hide and seek
You needn’t to be worried I can’t you cheat.”
The sweet company continued for many days,
They had faith and trust unflinching full,
In men and women moving about,
And might have formed the opinion,
That Man is their harmless guard.
One evening when I returned home,
I found the yard moaning, sweepingly wailed,
When they were hardly six months old,
On a rainy evening they were sold,
For a few pennies to a clumsy butcher.
The black angel encroached too early,
For they were too young to be slaughtered.
They might have felt under the sharp knife,
How meagre and cheap to man is their life,
And how lovingly they were beguiled to death.
At tender an age, they knew not, it is pity,
How Man restores faith before deceiving one.

My friend,
this is such a detailed poem. You took me back in time with you.
It is also such a lesson as young ones to learn of the process of death of a friend be it the furry ones.
I remember when the idea sunk in of my pet cow ending up upon the plate for dinner.
Was a hard pill to swallow once I caught on to the exact nature of the deeds.

Well since I've had a chance to read this before, I was so pleased to see that you posted it here. This was a magnificient piece that spoke loudly. Growing up on a farm helps me relate to this. I had a pet pig and a pet calf. The pig was killed by neighbor dogs
and the calf grew and went to market.
Thank you for sharing this touching piece.
Peace and hugs,
Laura |
