Women

Contributed by FRANCO on Tuesday, 23rd January 2007 @ 07:45:48 AM in AEST
Topic: dedicatedpoems

I Hopped and skipped teasingly
around the blossoming field
like an innocent deer;
feared not by men or by their gun;
fun was my world -
until the day came unaware
blemished my life forever.

“Conceal thyself inside a veil”
whispered my mother;
“b’cause you are now a teen,
you must know,
it’s our traditional routine.
Ho dear, men are all around
that is the fear.”

Confining my dreamy desire
inside the black blistering veil I wore,
watched my play mates walk
their way to school,
me stood drowned in my
own tear filled pool;
detained inside the dark veil
gazing at my childhood innocence perish,
like an aloof bystander.

Women today travel
Far beyond moon, so I hear,
but over here, women of my kind
mourn over our malicious life
wrapped behind our dark veils
Staring at the far moon, sighing
behind closed doors
live life like cattle
while day after day
night after night
we fight a voiceless
fanatic cultural battle.
FRANCO.

A beautiful dark poem from the woman's perspective inside the veil; it very much reminded me of another poem I love 'Purdah I' by Imtiaz Dharker.

This is a wonderful write that speaks for the women who would be punished or worse if they spoke the words...thank you for being their voice....

I was raised by a strong, beautiful, liberal, hairy legged, academic, hippy lady. A non~ gender specific equality as humans was simply something I got to grow up believing in! I have an incredible imagination & it is still such a very long reach for me to conceive the reality of these women...& I find your effort to give them voice quite chivalrous...As a woman, I feel myself both respected & championed by these words of yours, Franco. Thank You, sooo very much for being such a good man...a good human!!!
