Self-Defined

I sit in front of the telephone,
Just to indulge in the futile rings,
Pretending that nobody's home,
Trying to figure out why I do these things.
I turn the radio on,
And tune right past my favorite song,
Just to keep my fingers busy,
It feels so right, and yet, still wrong.
I prefer to converse in paper and ink,
The more distracted I am,
The more clearly I think.
I lay on my bed so I can spy on my ceiling,
I get my revelations from grafitti and tea leaves.
Self-defined as self-inflicting,
Self-amused, self-contradicting,
Self-assured, self-reliable,
Self-absorbed in self-denial.
What else is there to say?
This is me,
And if I'm not myself,
Who else will I be?
