A measure of solitude -
Am I to stand, gazing up
At a marked container
Held against the sun?
Or am I to look past it
At the eye of the sky,
Putting a blind eye in the scales
Against blindness of perception?
Scientists, masters of minutiae,
Wear the white coats
Of dealers in grief and insanity.
I’ll not know their ways.
I, like a nomad new-come
To language, use the ancient terms:
A foot, a palm’s breadth,
And keep at heart every proper span.

There are some words that defy expectation of comprehension unless you let let them sink in...this piece bypasses that where my heart and mind now jutting out as a corbel of art & strength seeming support for the souls rooftop.
Brilliant

Andrew, The simple mechanisms of this piece are superb. This so speaks of you, or my perception of you. *wink* I so loved the last stanza. Always a delight to see you've posted something new.
Peace and hugs,

simpleton that I am..I take this as I read it..putting nothing extra into it and just see someone looking through a container of something that the sun is shining through..
seeing the sky and all it's glories; not worrying about the scientific measurings and reasonings..just enjoying. Whatever it means, it's beautiful. |

Andrew,
this meant many things to me. Coming at a proper time. Universe has a way of planting seeds of comfort and greatness when needed most. I thankyou for that.
I find this write as all of your others pure, untouched and surpassed by none.

Often times your writes challenge me to re-read them and attempt to grasp their full content. However I find that each time I return, something new rises up out of your words. A new image, thought, or idea appears from someplace I hadn't seen them before. I appreciate that you do that to me. Thank you Andrew. You never fail to impress.

And this silence that you speak of? Can it truly measured but for each alone?

What delights me so about this piece is that it begs the reader to visit with it. ("Stay, please stay"). And I did... but as a visitor... staking no claim... assuming I knew nothing more than it allowed me to know. As best I can describe it... it felt like standing in a room within an art museum... feeling the presence of the paintings on the walls around me and wanting to close my eyes so that I might hear them better.
Yes... it felt a lot like that, and it was really rather wonderful.

..an exquisite and beautiful bombardment of imagery and metaphor Andrew.
It isn't all that often (infact, hardly ever) that I
would quote stanzas and such.. but here, the
finale should be celebrated to a PAIN my
friend~
..also, I would most assuredly fortify and duely
recommend your sentiments in the second stanza
to anyone who seeks to find some greater
perspective~
..all seemingly, without an ounce of effort by you.
I'm happy to have finally stuck around..lol
Wonderful work, as always Andrew~
As always, sincerely yours,
Billy |

Thank you for the simplicity of this piece... it fits with what you wish to communicate... just see, sense, and enjoy. A beautiful reminder. Excellent write, as usual, my good friend.

OK...I could be wrong here, but I see you standing at the edge of something. Decisions must be made, and they will not be rushed. Taking time...waiting on God's answers is the proper path, and you are right to take it. Waiting will reveal the truth and the will you seek. Maybe I'm all wet here, but that's what I read. It's not a bad place to be you know.
Blessings on you, Andrew.

Andrew, most enjoyable and inducive of reflection. I wish I had thought of this title - but I would have written a vastly different poem, and this one is a real treat.
I thought you measured solitude by how much you could stand ie when you've had enough, it becomes loneliness, when you go beyond that, its insanity.

Max weber would have appreciated this poem.
Essentially it is a comment on the sterility of popular modern social/ interpersonal relationships, which tend to be very secular, clinical, and rational to the point of absolute emptyness.
And worst of all, very unromantic.
Max weber disagreed with Marx, who said that the most dangerous consequence of capitalist societies was essentially social inequality. Max weber said this was not so.
Weber said the most tragic consequence was the stifling regulation, rationalisation, and dehumanisation that accompanies expanding bureacracies. He said this would lead to an "ever increasing disenchantment with the world". He also predicted that eventually science would completely overtake religeon, and envisaged modern society as a vast and growing system of rules seeking to regulate everything and crush the "human spirit".
"The modern individual is only a small cog in an a ceaselessly moving mechanism that prescribes to him an endlessly fixed routine of march".
Well, here we are.
I liked this poem completely, apart from the third strophe which contains the abstractions of " grief" and "insanity". It also has a slightly dogmatic, or "severe" edge, which clashes too harshly with the melancholic tone throughout.
But quality, very high quality. Well written,
excellent.

First of all, its been too long since I read you Fionndruinne
Second, I had to look up minutiae:) It means precise details; small or trifling matters
Is it not a trifle to look at the stars and stifle,
that a man does not know every staple
let it alone and gaze
hold it against your stomach and..
keep at heart every proper span
you are a man of the earth and I applaud your intelligence to remain so
