The Mailman

Contributed by yackerz85 on Wednesday, 27th December 2006 @ 08:39:18 AM in AEST
Topic: HumorPoetry

Once upon a Saturday fair, I slept on my lazy boy chair.
Sign of my failed endeavor, my lit book lay sprawled out on the floor.
Then, I was roused from my sleeping by the sound of footsteps creeping.
My rigid body jerked upward and let out a thunderous snore.
Rap tap tap, Rap tap tap, something loudly rattling on my front door.
It’s likely the wind and nothing more.

Sure that nothing was amiss, I returned back to the mind’s abyss
Only to be awakened by the echoing sound heard before.
Angry to be robbed of beauty sleep, I rose to investigate,
And I lethargically moved towards the window. What a tiresome chore!
I stared outside to find the reason for the continuing uproar.
There was a man in blue at my door.

The man with a mustache and dark eyes in a mailman's clever guise
Had a wry smile on his face. It’s a sight that scared me to my core.
He caught me staring at him through the window and knocked harder still.
Immobile… scared… shaking… I never felt trepidation so pure.
And the man persisted knocking more and more, louder than before.
Quoth the mailman, “Open the door!”

I asked him to leave my dwelling place with tears streaming down my face.
I bitterly begged. “Leave me alone; do not hurt me I implore.”
The suspicious man in blue gestured toward a package on the ground.
I said, "I get all my items from the local grocery store.
This package cannot be mine." But that comment he chose to ignore.
Quoth the mailman, "Open the door!"

"Sir, I can't. I know not your face. Don't invade my house for I have mace.
I do not trust you by any means, and we lack common rapport.
You have a suspicious look and your smile makes my body shiver.
My mother once taught me that strangers are people I must abhor.
If I let you in, I'm afraid there will be blood and gore".
Quoth the mailman, "Open the door!"

Is this door in my mind? Are this mailman and I somehow entwined?
Is this man going to hurt me or is my mind not sane anymore?
"And the Lord said, 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock.'"
Oh, how I fear that which is unknown! But in this I'm clearly sure,
Insanity will accompany the opening of my door.
Nevermore will I open the door!

"Quoth the mailman, "Open the door!"

What a kick! I must confess, I never would have considered a postal themed rewrite of Poe's classic... but, your piece leaves me smiling. : )

The second to last stanza has to be my favorite of the lot. Rapport, abhor, gore... all falling in with good rhythm - nice! Here's hoping your English teacher also appreciated your creativity and effort!!

(who is, by the way, dying to know what was in that package! *wink*)
