With raised cup Morley fain proposed a toast
that came to open wide the eyes of knights.
“To our sovereign majesty, King Laurence.
May he rule England forever and a day.”
All waited seeking lead of James their host
Prince gave a subtle smile, his eyes glint lights.
With smile on face Prince raised cup high to heights
above his golden mane and gave loud oath.
“To a majesty indeed.
May all the lords be drawn to him.”
A double entendre escaped not sights.
Sir Marcus gave his toast but nay to both.
For Morley he drank wine, for host’s words he was loath.
Near conversation gave Sir Marcus no
more information he should know of scheme,
that James doth make of Laurence, England’s foe,
for knights had beards in wine and eyes agleam.
Thus laughter rose floor stone to oaken beam.
Tongues spoke of battles making ribald jokes,
all sacred names profane mouths might blaspheme.
Talk ranged from fine mounts rode to stupid mokes,
when beat drew wagons great with wheels of many spokes.
