The Soldiers Ghost

Contributed by scott on Friday, 8th December 2006 @ 10:41:49 AM in AEST
Topic: SadPoetry

Now the sun is setting,
Night and day in tender touch,
But in this magic hour,
For me there isn't much.

Now the halls are all decked
With mistletoe and green,
Strange that I find sadness
In such a joyous scene

Outside the snow is falling,
inside the children play,
All I can do is watch and wish
Upon this Christmas day.

In the kitchen sits young Clara
Empty bottles at her side,
She tries to drink away the pain
For her husband's gone and died.

O! To hold her in my arms
And whisper "everything's all right",
But alas I cannot do this,
I must suffer at the sight.

And now her eyes are glistening,
Now the tears begin to start,
Strong wine and children's laughter
Can't heal a broken heart.

So I am left this Christmas Day
To watch those whom I loved the most,
And curse mans cruelty to man,
For I am the Soldiers Ghost.

i liked that. it really touches the emotions. the beat is even and easy to keep and i get meloncollic and angry all at the same time. i imagine many a soldier overseas would appreciate this one as well as a vast number those returned home.

Wow..such a heartbreaking write. Those last two stanzas said it all for me really. The others were setting up the scene, but those two really told the story, and a terrible tragic one at that...

Very well done. Very emotive write that makes you think, and be thankful...
