From
Chewing, grinding,
biting, gnawing,
a desolate land where once
trees were in bloom and
growing, now a dusty
battlefield of stumps
emits microwaves
and hums in turmoil..
The semi-arid woodland
plains of natural trumpets.
with soil mounds
from fallen Eucalypti
and Mulga by fluvial or
rain-splash disposition
the log material
has new roots as
termite feeding structures.
Both dry and damp woods
attract whole families
with many hungry species.
Out of this place comes
a gift, bite by bite,
some are left hollow
with hidden chambers
and circuitous routes.
Tapping the many standing
coolibah for exactly which
has acoustic firmness
from the softened
died back dry rot.
Once plucked the hard trunk
standing tall
fist at the sky
rocked until
the rooted tendrils snap
hot coals are stirred and
shaken till all of its denizens
are finally displaced.
Then with voice and breath
test
for the Utterance of the spirits.
Later wash, dress,
appease, paint
then listen
the yidaki will say its name clearly.
Place ones lips
as if for kissing
on the narrow end
where the gods edge
greets with beeswax ridge,
a vibration of breath
gently building
resonant compression
till the voice of authority
beckons...
...children and hearts
to gather
round the communal fire
a metric from clapsticks
harmonizes as stories
retold in rhythms stopping and starting.
The memories of the dream-time
dancers alive as the drone
and teller bond
from mirror to lens
communicating by suggestion;
the effect of powers now extinct...
The sabertooth and cave bear
many are brought to life
by wind and lip,
souls move in performance,
so real that some jump in fright.
Alarms turn to ooo's and ahhhs
as the trance synchronizes with
the frolic of shadows,
until each begins to
oscillates between
the sacred past
and present .

Oh yeah, the didgeridoo.... the magical instrument of most intense sound. I love the sound. I cannot for the life of me get the circular breathing going. I am jealous of those that can master it. We have a friend from South Carolina that we see every now and again at festivals, I am amazed at his talent to play this aboriginal instrument of sound. I love how you took this piece from the beginning of the wood's most sacred journey. Ever listen to Inlakesh? Magnificient didgeridoo there. Much peace in dreamtime, my brother.
Hugs,
Laura (who now has Damon searching for the Inlakesh CD....he also liked the write) |

Hey AJ~ I was ahead of schedule today so it meant I had some time to come and visit your pages.
Your magical and intriguing piece of poetry took me to the great Ayers Rock , the Aborigines and their Dream Times~ You my friend, I know, have mastered how to play the great didjeridoo. You'll have to teach me how to master it too. It's gonna take quite a few attempts I can tell you that, lol, but hey I'm willing to give it a go :-)
AJ~ my dear fellow poet you are amazing. From the first time I read your remarkable poetry I was totally hooked. I'm a total fan of your poetry my dear friend. You are what a true poet really is~ Thanks so much for posting this awesome write~
Blessings to you ~
love n hugs from ur devoted fan/friend,

Once again, I find anothers words to say what is in my own soul...
"There is a dream where the contents are visible...
Where the poetic champions compose...
Will you breath not a word of this secrecy...
Will you still be my special rose..."
- Van Morrison

Well, I prolly haven't chewed this one enough yet.. but i like it alot. it sounds like you have been to a traditional dance or drum circle with the didj. thats cool!
I also love the sound of the didj too, wish i could circular breath, but its awesome to read some art about that instrument. Alot of people here in Canada dont even know what it is.
Thanks for posting!
Write On!
