The snow falls in gentle lazy circles
Painting my world
The snow crunches beneath my feet
And the wind nips at my nose
Home is in the distance
Smoke pours from the chimney
As I draw nearer I see a tree in the window
Decorated in silver and blue
Lights twinkling merrily
I can’t wait to get home
It will be my son’s first Christmas tomorrow
He loves the lights
Loves the music
But he’s such a happy baby
I’m finally home
“Where’s Aidan?”
I ask my wife
“In his bed, sleeping.
Please don’t wake him, he just stopped crying”
She replied from the kitchen
“I won’t”
I promise, knowing I will
He’s too beautiful to leave there
I tiptoe up the steps
Determined not to wake him this time
I open his door
I can see him laying there
‘When did he learn to roll over?’
I wonder
Seeing him on his stomach
I cross the room
SOMETHINGS WRONG
His face is buried in his little pillow
He’s not breathing
I pick him up
He doesn’t wake
I breathe into his little mouth
“CALL 911”
I yell to my wife
Breathe
Please breathe
I blow in again
He’s so cold
He’s not moving
I breathe into him again
Willing him to live
I rush down stairs
Holding him gently
Praying that my wife can fix him
She was always better with him
She’ll make him live
She sees his lifeless body and starts crying
An ambulance siren is heard in the distance
Why is it taking so long?
Paramedics rush in
I’m still trying to breathe life into him
They take him from me
They pronounce him dead at 6:57 pm
The lights twinkle on a blue and silver tree
Reflecting off an ornament that says
“Baby’s first Christmas”

I would'nt know what to do.
I imagine after something like
that your world would just stop.
The gentle christmas images
you use at first provide a stark and
interesting contrast to the tragedy
that follows and you keep the suspense
building to the last moment.
It was very sad but you did it quite
well. Truly , Doug
