Kitty

Oh Kitty I would never watch you die
I would have hollered from my window
Or tossed a (geranium) pot from my planter box
At least
But last night you were alive
Your dollface
Just the three of us having a smoke
In some cafe, never been there before
But I couldn't see his ugly mug
Just your pretty face
Frozen (oh those eyes) asking all of us the question
Printed in New York Times and magazines waiting for an answer
Thirty-eight law-abiding, upstanding, God-fearing taxpayers
Perfectly respectable (wearing the flag on November eleven)
Perfect strangers (only the postman knew their names)
Kitty used to pass in the parking lots and porticoes
Catching but never fetching their eye
As she bumped into the gent from the corner flat
With the double-breasted mohair
Shopping for groceries, did their eyes meet
When they stopped heal to heal in the aisle
With cake mixes (in bags) and bread stuffing (in boxes)
Or what about their faces peering back from the glass display
With the iced fish and chilled meats
Was ever a moment captured in the glancing?
But most of life escapes
When Kitty screamed and made her pleas
What a slap in the face (to be left alone!)
To the private life behind each apartment and window
(and door and peephole)
Not one would accept the invite
Turn the other cheek and turn the other way
(and for God's sake turn the channel)
Your dollface pressed into the concrete
Waiting for an answer
That your heart was never pressed into vinyl
Thirty-eight blameless and nameless for your death
Because behind closed doors,
Cars, careers, families and game shows
You were never alive
