I Knew Her When
~
I never wanted to hold your hand,
I never wanted to be that man.
You’re a big girl now, who’s on her own,
Able to make decisions from what you’ve shown.
You don’t need someone holding you down,
You don’t need that negative energy hanging around.
~
I never wanted to be the one,
I never wanted to control the fun.
You’re ready to stand in front of the line,
And leave the nay-Sayers far behind.
You rose to the top on your own,
Look now at how you’ve grown.
~
I never wanted to share the light,
Of an emerging force taking flight.
You’ve proved you had what it takes,
To slow you down would be a mistake.
I’m more than content to stand back in line,
And watch from a distance, for it’s your time.
~
I never wanted to hold your hand,
You don’t need me to make a stand.
You’re a force of one, solid as a rock,
You have action behind your talk.
I’m proud to say, “I knew her when”,
So happy to watch her win.
