Got a sign I see
he's carrying
and he's got
a worn out smile too
still has a slight twinkle
if you look close
in his eyes of blue
Looks like he needs a
nice warm bath
could use a clean shave
some government attention
is what this poor
brother really craves
The older couple
lays on the floor
resting in the laundromat
belongings they carry
fill their dirty
overstuffed
backpacks
His hair is gray and long
hers is a bit too
their faces show the
wear of life
lines revealing many
past paid dues
A couple sits at the
stop sign she is
clearly disabled
Sign held so high
by her man
begging for food
to set on....
no table
Dental care is needed
before one is edentulous
Medical assistance
before a system overload
People in this country
suffering
needlessly
I feel their stories
need told
November, 2006

That is one thing I will praise the UK for...free health care for all. I'm sure a lot of people think that everyone in the states are doing OK and can get work if they want to but if you have any health problems and little money, life can be very difficult.
Again you've expressed your feelings excellently with this piece.

again, the sadness unfolded very vivid to me as well. I think your right we need to spread the word though it always seems to fall upon death ears. We can march off to take care of outher countries problems ( or so we think) be at war and are not taking care of our own people, now how damn pathetic and sad is that?
Another beautiful poem sis
huge hugs and a tissue to dry your eyes,
sniffles

Strong and emotional social poetry, Laura. I see more and more drifters, bums and beggers on Sydney's streets as well, many of them good people living hard in a first-world city, but I think you've got it worse in the good ol' US of A. At least we have some remnants of a universal health care system ( although any dental work beyond filling or pulling a rotten tooth is considered cosmetic - can you believe it?)
Short of sharing everything you have till its gone, what's the answer?

Good descriptions of needy people. Really better than photographs. You give us insight into what could help them. |

Yes indeed, their stories need to be told. What a worthy endeavor you embark upon in this eloquently written piece Laura. You very graphically depict, with powerful imagery, the plight of the poor and homeless. You're right, it doesn't seem right in a affluent society such as ours!
Well stated my friend,
Will |
