The Full Coffee Cup

Contributed by alison on Tuesday, 31st October 2006 @ 02:45:45 PM in AEST
Topic: war

The coffee cup full,
The foam settling on the top,
The aromatic steam slowly drifting upwards,
The mornings come,

A plain bagel sits unattended,
A news paper left unopened,
A cat still meowing for its meal,
A day alone comes again,

With thoughts only of you,
Wondering what war you really are fighting,
With the night falling over-seas,
Wondering where you are now,

I hope you’re not cold,
I hope you’re not alone,
I hope you’re not hungry,
I hope you come back home,

War ripping us apart,
War keeping you so far away,
War keeping me from talking to you,
War still can’t stop me from feeling you,
War can’t destroy everything,

How hard it must be for you,
How long and treacherous,
How strong you must be,
How courageous and unselfish you are,
How come war must be?

So I leave my breakfast to itself,
So I forget the paper and the cat,
So I pray for you and your brothers,
So I cry for the people you may die for,
So I wait only for your footsteps at the door.

War can’t kill everything.
And the coffee cup stays full

Aw it's really sad. It's almost refreshing to hear about the poor people left behind rather than just about the futility of war, although they have their place too. Surely the world wasn't designed to be like this. Keep the faith and keep believing in LOVE!!!!

This is a powerful piece. I really like your use of imagry - it really adds to express the feelings for the person at war. You can't help but get drawn into this piece.
And I'm with you in the last stanza - war can't kill everything...
I can't help but feel that this is a metaphor? I may be wrong - regardless, this is another great write Alison!!
