May twenty first
A happy day, yet the worst
My father won't be there for my big day
And his presence I thirst
Looking around at all the happy faces,
my mind wonders to other places
Does he know?
Does he know he's missing the show?
Is he out there makin' that dough
just so
he can go
down to the liquor sto'
and forget?
Forget he has a graduating daughter
to which he fathered?
But he won't bother
Does he even remember my birthday?
In is his mind is it okay to miss such a day?
To think I'll be better off and in the long run...okay?
If he remembers my birthday
the he remembers me,
and in doing so he forgets me
If he knows I'm eighteen
then he knows I'm graduating
He puts me in the back of his mind
and maybe thinks that I'll find
more happiness if to him I am blind
All I know is...looking at all the happy faces
searching for his face my mind races
But soon I'll put it to rest
and end such chases
And end my unceasing unhappiness

Great writing. I know the pain of not having a father around, especially on those important days. |
