So Long Shakespeare

Contributed by one-curly-fry on Monday, 16th October 2006 @ 08:35:46 AM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

Life may never give me a lover
- this I can handle
a gift given at twelve
- a heart touched by endless winds
- longsighted eye; passing horizons
another gift at twenty
- life in its purity and innocence
I’ve already been given more than most
and will laugh from Ularu’s height
bathe under Table Land waterfalls
Yes, I will live!

This will be deeper than that kiss
- and her pitiful promises
how I once longed – just to wake
to find those eyes on me
- followed by that smile
but it’s a dream – a lie
the last angel died long ago.

My first passion
- Gippsland’s rolling hills
- grey towers – defiant
- a Lyre Bird hurrying away
to hear the Magpie morning song
that is never a dream – not a lie
I’ve already been given more than most
so long Shakespeare
- your love no longer exists
my friend.

Ah, poet... I could write a novel here in some crazed attempt to fully express my thoughts on those closing lines. I'll forego the inclination to do so - if only for knowing love is not anything that anyone can define for us. It is, rather exactly, what it is - as defined by own experiences with and of it. I do wish for you that you look back on this one day with an overwhelming, wonder induced thought of "Holy cow... I had no idea!". Love is sort of silly that way... it'll sneak up on you sometimes and redefine itself in a way that you can't imagine until it happens... it is then that one's past is put in proper context and one's future instantly changed, I think. Call me an eternal optomist... but I don't believe even the greatest of poets can get it fully on the page. There simply aren't words enough to convey what it can be.

Another excellent piece!

Often emphatic,
~Snemmy
