Ghosts of Ghosts

Contributed by fionndruinne on Thursday, 28th September 2006 @ 11:06:33 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

9.28.06

And I think
what haunts the most,

far from being
the ghosts of ghosts
of our first
dim hopes
of a blue sky
and smooth sailing,

is the apprehension,
before the hinges
squealed,
and the door was opened.

There is no fantasy
in the light
of this millennium.
In the brazen,
baring light.
In the wash of such
overbearing truth,
we can anticipate
no longer.

And I think
what haunts the host

of strange beings,
the ghosts of ghosts
of our parents'
shunned-century dreams
and comfortable,
age-old ideas,

is the heartless burden
we lade ourselves with,
truths that strip
us to the bone.

We go on,
though, to foot it through
the resultant bleak future-scape;
and that is our end,
until we find ourselves
one day,
changed, possible,
the ghosts of ghosts
of our former selves.

Ohhhhh.... I like this!!!!!

I adore deep pondering that makes itself to the page... especially, perhaps, when it is somehow both conclusive and elusive. And I... I believe fell into this once when those (fabulous!) hinges squealed. There is so very much here that every reader, I think, would do well to delve in. I cannot even tolerate the thought that someone might give it quick glance. Oh, it deserves much more than that!

Excellent, excellent work, Andrew!

Dearest Andrew, Wow this simply blew me away. One of the best poems I have ever read. A deep and most moving write. I honestly don't have the right words to give your outstanding poem the credit that it deserves. Well done and thanks so much for sharing your dynamic work with us.
hugs n prayers,
Sue M
who is gonna go back and read it again :-)

For me too, Andrew, one of the most irresitibly presented set of complex images and sub texts that I have ever read on site, with an amazingly lyrical hook line. Just envious my man, and deeply touched.

This poem is so saturated with painful pondering of the zeitgeist of our generation compared to that of our parents, and also, what could have been for us.Still, not all is drowned in the wake of time, as you say, and universal themes tend to recycle over decades, centuries. Majic and mystery and high order callings are sleeping in the soil........

S.
p.s. this one immediately inspired me to go and write a poem called 'Dweller', so thank you for that.

You should be proud of this one, Andrew. You've opened up a bit more here than you have before (or at least for a while) I think.

It's sad, really.

A thought provoking write. (Which is really something when it's 6:30am.. I usually don't wake up my brain until 9 ;) )

I will be back to this often, I am sure.

Great write, my friend.

*hugs*

  • Woah. *blinks a bit*
I am so, so sorry now that I haven't wandered to your page in yonks.

    This is.. exhilarating.
Kinda left me all breathless and curious and even a bit confused ("ghosts of ghosts" *stops to get her head around that again :P).

I can't even pick a favourite stanza here, that wouldn't be fair to the poem as a whole.

I just want to say that was amazing.
Thankies for sharing this with everyone. :)

Egads man....I had to check to see if I had mistakenly clicked on a write from a sage poet of the past. This is astounding in its depth and the presentation leaves me speachless....no small task.

    Very, VERY well done
    Barkeep!

Thank you for your comments.I find a poem can be a like a solo or duet, it can express as sonata or concerto and others are orchestrated symphonic. Your effort is well polished and highly accomplished. As i scrolled through your more recent pieces I was struck how you move between the meaning and the suggestions in between the lines. As well you have appeal to all as the old voice your poetry is a deeper speech from your ancient well developed connection to being. I hope to digest more of your good work.

    Peace
    Yang

Deep and profound, definately not a poem to be taken lightly.
I truly read this as quite a bleak picture of the world fraught with loss, and hope that I read a glimmer of salvation in the last lines.
    Impressive Andrew!

God I forgot how good you are when it comes to writing a poem.

This was well written, well thought and just perfect in it's own way.

I'll be reading and following your work.

This is the best of yours that I've read, deepest, too.
There, enough of that, don't drop the brush.

Ah,those long-past hopes of blue skies and smooth sailing.I remember too, though cannot quite place them, accurately,in time, those squealing hinges.Once crossed, the threshold of such a door sets in motion the inexorable changes of reality.Yes,perhaps to ghosts of ghosts of our former selves.
Loved swimming in this poem. The waters may not have been at the temperature you set,but they cleansed me well, all the same,

    Den

The truth is a language worth speaking, friend. Though I sometimes find myself trying to force myself into your words, it is always worth it. You remind me that words, whether complex or simple, are but vessels of truth when used for such. And as it is truth that is my native tounge, I find your pieces much worth deciphering.

    Peace and grace to you,
    Joshua

My goodness! Andrew actually emotes! (Just kidding, War) This is by far the best thing that I have read in some time. It would seem that you listened well, Childe. In a matter of a few stanzas, you were able to take us through generations and this path that we all have to tread. I like the feeling this formed: a bit sad, and then a strange peace as it settled.

    Well done indeed, mo caraid.

    Be Well,

    Dawn
