A single Strand of Hair

Contributed by Winterland on Tuesday, 26th September 2006 @ 09:29:27 AM in AEST
Topic: oops

You came to me today in tears
My love.
Your day, your moment, your week,
Had been wrong.
Someone had pushed you, called you a name,
Hurt your feelings in a million other ways.
You tripped on the sidewalk,
Fell off your bike,
Scraped your knee.
The happenings are many and the same.

I hold you against me,
Stroke your head to help you cry.
I brush the hair from your face,
And my heart aches inside.
A single strand of hair clings to my fingers,
And I wonder.

If I could have all the strands,
Of all the times,
What kind of tapestry could I weave?
Could I take us back to each time you needed me,
Each hurt, each pain, each mistake.
Each wrong word could be corrected,

Each misunderstanding put right.
Could my wisdom gleaned in the future
Fix each trouble in the past?
Could I forever hang onto these times?

When you no longer need this,
This closeness, this feeling, this love,
I could wrap myself in the blanket
Of your hair.
Transport myself back through the ages
Of downy fuzz, style, length and curl.
And I could always have the feeling
Of your hot head upon my chest.

You pulled yourself back,
And pulled me to the present.
You wiped your tears
And smiled at me.
As you walked away from me
I could feel the tears welling up
And I carefully untangled the single strand of hair.

Wow Jennifer, maybe we ought to ask for a new category called "Beautifully Powerful Poetry". Lacking the category, it's truly an inspirational piece for good parenting. Very fine work!

Wow...this is so full of emotion. I love it.

I can imagine that so many parents would be able to relate to this. Letting go of the times when they could help and heal, just by a cuddle and soothing words.

I agree with what Ken Moore said, this is a very powerful write.

*hugs*

Thank you for this moment Jennifer..

That's a powerful write.
You're good.
Hah.
I like how you reflect to the past then pulled back into the present.
Great poem.
