A Husband's Goodbye

Contributed by Steel on Friday, 22nd September 2006 @ 11:15:19 AM in AEST
Topic: dedicatedpoems

Beloved mate,
your life draws to a close,
your departure delayed no more, my devoted rose.
Your fight was valiant, but it has come to an end,
my child’s mother, and grammy, and my dearest friend.

Don’t be worried by the way you appear,
just remnants of the years and pain you had to bear.
Now on this bed you await, lying in repose,
but all I see is the beautiful girl I betrothed.

You will not cry again,
my love, my wife,
you will be in the land of the living,
with no tears, and no strife.

I’m not far behind,
we will live again,
and walk once more, my lover, my friend.
We will laugh and run, we will dance and sing,
in the land of love, in the hands of the King.

This is not goodbye, but a brief so-long,
till we make our reunion,
and sing a new song.

This I can relate too. I spent the last nine months of my husbands life, caring for him at home. This verse is quite fitting of my memory:

Don’t be worried by the way you appear,
just remnants of the years and pain you had to bear.
Now on this bed you await, lying in repose,
but all I see is the beautiful girl I betrothed.

My husband looked really well the last few weeks of his life, to me he didn't change at all. wrong, he became bloated and his skin was sallow. I only found this out when someone gave me photographs of him. Perhaps its denial, or maybe love makes you only see the beauty.
Your poem is beautiful, because it is realistic topic, and you have put a lot of thought and emotion into it. Thank you. Sue x
