The Contest

Contributed by Willofree on Friday, 22nd September 2006 @ 10:43:32 AM in AEST
Topic: anguished

Long I have anticipated
The day of reckoning has arrived
I vacillated from grandiose anticipation
To a depth of daunting rejection
Fantasy and reason compete for my mind

Like a forest fire raging
There burned an essential need for verification
I felt I had to win the contest
I had elevated epectations, to my chagrin
An arrangement for disappointment begins

So elusive is this need to win
After all, what do I have to prove?
Expectations became tenuously high
As if magic could transform my poem
Into something masterfully crafted and appealing

Nervous apprehension, rampant within
My adrenalin level peeked
Heart racing, palms sweating
"Settle down," I scolded
Was my reputation at stake?

Finally, the winner's list appeared
My name conspicuously absent
A second time, then a third, I perused the names
Emotion erupted and tears flowed
Feeling downtrodden and defeated

I slumped in my chair, feeling shattered
How could my poem be so inferior?
Maybe I need to abandon writing...
Eventually better judgment prevailed
My expectations are more realistic

Oh Will, this is an anguished write. Darn you man, you know you are a brilliant writer, I hope you never feel the need to question that again. You're always a winner to me, my friend. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and wise words.
Peace, Laura

Terry ... I will accept realistic expectations ... as long as you don't settle for lesser dreams.

Dream big my friend ... over and over and over again. Don't ever allow yourself not to. So this contest, your words didn't suit what someone was searching for ... I do not feel as though that is any way to place merit on ones self worth ... ( funny ... I think I just read a poem from you about self worth ). I told my daughter, who was job hunting to apply to everywhere ... yeah, there will be some dissapointments ... but perhaps that is intended because the best fit for you hasn't presented itself yet. The same, I think can be said about contests. Dream Terry, dream BIG !!!

I am in full and complete agreement with snazzy here, wil!!

"The great danger for most of us is not that our AIM is too high and we miss,
but that it is too low and we achieve it!"

~Michelangelo

This was such an amazing write, for so many reasons ..
Your drive, determination, will AND talent are what will sustain
you through anything!! Just writing this piece, methinks is
proof enough, that you've processed and worked through
the pain and all .. don't ever give up! Dreams are MEANT to
be big! It matters not what we achieve, but that we TRY .. [where
I believe half the fun lies, actually! : ) ]

Excellent, EXCELLENT post!!

I think more of us can relate to this than you realize.
There are way too many....way too many great poets that go unrecognized. There's a reason for everything....DEFINATELY do not ever give up!!!
