(Meanings of some words in the poem. Kachra-peti = waste bins,
Sahabji = Sir/Gentleman)
I am still gazing at the sky, looking at the birds fly free.
Counting the plastic bags I collected from the Kachra-peti.
It’ll hopefully be 5 kg…? that gives me an earning of
Rupees 2.50. (Approx. 2 pence)
It’s enough to feed a family of three.
Everything had changed recently…
My sister, my mother and me,
Live under a big tall tree.
Under a shed of course we have,
A couple of utensils but no toilet to pee.
In my free time I see…
Students going to primary;
But I spend my time climbing trees.
I get beaten when I go near any Sahabji.
I drink water from a lake when I feel free.
I can’t give a speech but I can write indeed.
My sister walks on wheels.
My mother sold her kidney,
So that we can live debt free.
We’re not allowed in parks
But we visit the city dump twice a week!
Parks don’t have things like
Pollution, Disease and sometimes… pieces of dead bodies!!
Apart from this everything is trouble free.
Living was so risky in history.
