The Deep Down Deception

Topic: DarkPoetry

'Oh what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practice to deceive'.

Sir Walter Scott (Marmion, 1808)

The deep down deception
hides in the perfidy of a child,
a lover’s hard kiss of indifference
steals mementos from your
treasure chest of self worth;
slakes its thirst at the well of Spirit
and wears your face in the mirror.

The hard, core betrayal of the heart
rends the veil of pretty hope,
is a bone hurt, beyond the flesh
a writhing python of pain
choking your best breath;
tips your world off its axis and
speaks with a familiar voice.

Lies, little daggers to bleed you slow
wielded by tongues, kept sharp by convention,
bully the liberating truth
and scapegoat the confessor;
weaving sticky webs of deceit
in which to cocoon our soft selves,
and you, the worst spider to your own fly.

I am convinced that self constructed webs serve a purpose (for a time); they are, I believe, sanctuaries of sorts... a viable enough place to remain while gathering the readiness to proceed beyond them. But... as you so perfectly represent here, true solace cannot be found within such a place - only a safe sort of familiar, quiet torture. It is, there, a life of barely-breathing, no? It is, too, a dangerous sort of existence if one lingers there too long; lest the lack of oxygen has a permanent effect. And that reality... is terrifying (or should be) to anyone currently entangled.

I smiled at first as I was reading... smiling (or smirking really, I guess) for having realized by the conclusion of the first stanza, "Geez.... he knows"... and throughout the remainder of the write, then, I watched as you offered further evidence of that knowing. Your descriptions are gloriously on target, least in this reader's opinion and the truth, here, undeniable (even, I suspect, to those currently tucked up in their cocoons). Your author's note was enough to get my mind turning - and that concluding line? that near about set it into a tail spin.

Thought provoking, truly. Painfully so.

its odd that i came across this poem..it was only a couple of days a go that heard that phrase used in a film and it really struck me.

you have used some many thought provoking images that my mind could barely keep up, which that in itself is something with the way im feeling....

nice write and thanks for giving me something else to think about for a brief moment...
