High atop the plastic slide
The little pilgrim stands.
Singing to the neighbors cat,
Directing with her hands
Small arms wave intently
Acknowledging the trees.
It’s obvious her audience
Is everything she sees.
Pointing to each pumpkin
Signaling their cue.
From what started as a solo
Does a trio now ensue.
Tiny hand cupped to her mouth
Hips swinging to and fro
Serenading dandelions
While passing autos slow.
Watching through the window
All I can do is smile
Though I know she must come in soon
Let the child sing awhile.
Too soon life will overtake her
With the burdens it can bring
Now she’s three and free and fabulous
Just let the child sing
