And I know you wish you had it
Like we had it last year
She's the farthest
you could get away from me –
but you can never get away from me.
I can't stand what we've become,
[addicts, narcissists,
loners, misanthropes-
take your pick]
Models of teenage calamity.
Never knowing
What to say or where to look
When we're in the same room
For some reason
I thought we were past all the evasiveness.
We’re in the middle
Of someplace dishonest.
I’ve got my knees to my chest,
fetal position
And there’s something very wrong –
We’re not the kind of people
Who deserve to be alone.
But was she the farthest
You could get away from me?

Keilantra, what a wonderful turn of phrase you have - and the subject matter! Handled so well in its complexity but still in the mind and heart of a young woman.
As you have so eloquently addressed, the choice of new partners is sometimes the limits of social group and imagination, no less painful for the one who has to witness it - but men, young and old, have a greater insenstitivity than girls and women about the impact of choosing the new love interest so close to home.
A terrific write, and shame on those who didn't read and comment on this little jewel of experience.
