The Black and White Picture

Contributed by historykat on Tuesday, 5th September 2006 @ 11:58:27 AM in AEST
Topic: oops

I am constantly reminded
of the feeling that I am in a lonely playground

I feel

Fingers brush the glassy cherry red that covers giggling monkey bars
and the banisters of a bridge-like structure painted a daffodil yellow
and the purple swings, colourful rhythm in a colourful breeze

but I am in a black and white film it seems
black and white makes everything simple to the audience
or the naked eye
or an eye seeing anything for the first time at all

the colours in between only complicate things
they bring in emotion and feeling
when all that is intended to be seen is the lonely metal and the little girl swinging on the swings
an eerie happiness in black and white, she is ghostlike with a ghostlike laugh
perhaps the girl is me and I am watching the younger me while smiling
or frowning

Was an accurate picture painted?

Because -

it’s supposed to be a metaphor
a deeper meaning – a revelation (finally!) that will show me the Big Picture
the Big Picture – people keep talking about it
I’m convinced they’re waxing philosophers until the three words pop out of their mouth

The scene is a metaphor and here’s the never ending analysis:

It’s to show that we're all alone and only feel the cold metal
but - if we're all alone than loneliness itself becomes an obsolete term - does it not?

I am constantly reminded
of the surgeons whose pagers squeak to them
And it’s like the calling of a deity
Within seconds…
fingers brushing scalpels and medical knives that dive into
the glassy cherry red that churns through us, uniting us all and separating us all
and the souls of expressionless face of the unconscious relation lying on the cold steel

but it is a black and white film it seems
directed by Tarantino most likely
where the glassy cherry red is the only colour seen
(or the only colour shown?)

It’s a metaphor that leaks out and branches to different meanings
From the corrupt society, to history, to friendship, to all the things that complicate life
All these interpretations are problematical – so we return to the black and white

and the soul of the bleeding patient looks down on it's body
salty drops of liquid soul fall from the opalescent figure
They’re tears of joy, incomprehension, anger, woe or pain
it's supposed to be a metaphor for what we find in complex things

but what do we find in complex things?

who would know?

The tears only fall in black and white
