oops

Laughter echos through alleyways
a concrete jungle where children play
the days of dells and hollows
they have all gone away
fire hydrants broke and spewing
while children jump into the spray
no more ponds to swim in
they have all gone away
fire escapes with clothes lines hanging
the monkey bars of this day
no more tree houses with boys climbing
they have all gone away
kick the can, hide and seek
mashed potatoes, chicken fried steak
Saturday cartoons, sandlots and more
replaced by progess knocking at our door
slow afternoon walks, arm in arm
replaced by guns to do us harm
drives through the country, kids in tow
no more country to see, only concrete to grow
a tear I shed when as a child
these things meant boredom to me
years later now I look around
a tear I shed at the changes I see
