I slowed in front of a house
and after three years
it remained the same
mustard yellow siding
and cracked concrete steps
I considered knocking
knowing I'd be let in
by my stepmother
who was probably awake
correcting 2nd grade tests
ready to make me a bed
and a cup of hot chocolate
but at 3am
the only remaining light
was above those ancient concrete steps
my father's only aknowledgement
that he'd lost a daughter
somewhere in the world
