I t is rush hour in 34th street, Manhattan,
One day in 3000 A.D.
The traffic moving at snail’s pace,
But, those on the move are not human beings,
Animals and animals of all sort everywhere.
At the intersection stood Giraffe,
Controlling the traffic.
A Lion with uniform, watching closely,
To book the traffic law offenders.
And Penguins, in single line formation,
Enjoying their walk on the pavement.
A monkey perched on a high- rise building,
With young one clutching her bosom.
And suddenly, the young one became excited
And pointed to his mother, down the street,
To something running very fast,
And chased by ‘some people’.
“Mom. What is that new creature?
I ain’t seen it before!”
“ Oh, that? It is called ‘man’,
Once, millions inhabited all over on the earth,
But, now, their number dwindled to a few hundreds.”
Replied the mother in monotone.
“ Why, what happened?” asked the young one curiously.
“ It is a long story my child”
Said the mother in a pensive mood.
“ Man is its own enemy,
Some aggressive elements of the species
Called ‘terrorists’, killed many brutally.”
“How cruel!”
“We also fight, but never kill our people.”
Quipped the young one.
“Besides, they made a nasty weapon called,
Nuclear Bomb, so powerful;
A large number of them perished,
In this bomb deployed barbaric wars.
Remaining few became victims,
To natural calamities”
The young one pondered over,
And asked innocently,
“Why not our govt. declare them as
‘ Endangered Species’.”
“ Oh! That would be the most foolish thing.
Men are very revengeful in nature,
If we allow them to multiply,
We will all be in the soup”
Answered the mother furiously.
The young one remained silent for a while,
And after a deep thought, asked inquisitively,
“Mom, why our people are chasing it,
To kill it for meat or for the skin?”
The mother lost her temper,
And muttered, “ Don’t be silly,
Not an inch of it is good for anything.
Our people want to punish it,
For all the cruelties, inflicted on us,
They killed some of us for delicious meat,
Some were hunted for their skin,
Some of us were tortured in labs,
In the name of research and now
It is our turn to teach them a good lesson.”
Said the mother, scratching her body.
