Noone Said It Was Easy

"Noone said it was easy"

That's what my first Chief told me after my first live-fire training. It was 30 something degrees out and I was dripping wet with sweat. When I took off my turnout coat my t-shirt was soaked. I sat on the backboard of our equipment truck. I had just spent 15 minutes in an old mobile home on the nozzle. Only 2 months on the department we hadn't had many calls for me to get any experience. We spent the entire day letting all of us 'Probies' get a little action. Then we spent the whole night barbecuing, with this southern boy showing all them Wisconsin cheeseheads how you really barbecue chicken. Just as the first set of chicken was ready to come off the grill, our pagers went off. A report of smoke coming from a house 2 miles away. We still had our trucks with us and had the best response to a fire the department has had in years. When we got there, Chief put me on the interior attack. I went in with the guy I worked for on the nozzle. Breathing heavily, my first thought was that I was going to drain this air tank in two minutes. I finally got my nerves calmed and then I saw the glow. This fire was definitely not like my training fire. The nozzleman opened up and knocked down the fire before I even knew what was going on. My first fire was a success, we minimized damage and noone was hurt.

That's what was going through my head as I tried to cut a 14-year-old little girl out of a 3 car MVA. My buddies and I telling her everything was going to be ok and she would make her dance recital the next week, but none of us really knowing the answer. It sure wasn't easy sitting in the audience 6 months later when she finally took that stage.

"Noone said it was easy"

Walking out of the emergency room after a doctor just pronounced the 18-year-old boy I spent the last 20 minutes fighting to save and get to the hospital. He'll never get to use that hockey scholarship that he was out celebrating when his snowmobile struck a tree at 30 miles an hour.

"Noone said it was easy"

Reading an article about a 12-year-old girl with big dreams of being a dentist when she grows up. What 12-year-old girl wants to be a dentist?? It's not easy knowing that her dream will never come true because three days ago you helped take her out of a plane crash.

"Noone said it was easy"

Watching on TV as 343 of your brothers answer their last call doing what they were trained and loved to do. The complete feeling of uselessness as you watched the chaos that followed. It's not easy watching the funerals and memorial services that seemed to never end
