This blanket of deceit I’ve hid under
No longer keeps the monsters at bay,
Nor does it keep me warm.
My toes or my nose
One or the other is exposed.
Hiding in the corner waiting for the right moment,
On the shoulder of doubt
In the cradle of solitude
The continuous silent shriek of fear,
Echoing laughter of those sworn to protect
Rape me with the twisted words
Filled with moral integrity, over flowing with righteousness.
Make God a spokes person for the deeds of my nation.
Pat my back, shake my hand, and spit venom in my perception,
Tell me I love it; allow me to purge my guilt in the form of false honor.
First pay me to seek and destroy,
Then to train more seekers, more destroyers.
How understanding it can not stop,
Again, again, again, calling.
I answer, first in line, back in the sand again, it taste different.
Fear of the black smoke that rolls me to sleep,
Don’t ask don’t tell, beautiful phrase,
Were the children meant to die?
Is it cold in the district yet?
Heat in the morning, in my minds eye the fires never fade.
Promise I can stay next time.
Nothing here, home is where my screams are deluded
Dilated, only exposed in the oil field that pump the blood
The blood of every nation, man, woman, and child.
This blanket, this torn useless piece of wool.
My grandfather sad it keep him warm and safe.
He was shorter than I.

Entirely potent and enormously moving piece. There is much embedded here - more, I'm certain, than I (or any reader for that matter) could ever fully understand. At the core, though, is an obvious lingering pain that tugs at me ferociously.
I could ramble on here for a great while, but know that I could never say quite enough. Please know, however, that I am impressed - in enumerable ways, I am. The way that you've opened and closed this piece is exquisite and the everything-in-between is heartwrenchingly real.
And lastly, I wish to thank you... for this, for truth telling and for your service. I wish you well and hope for you the kind of peace that is so often most elusive (inner peace, that is).

I love the ending..
"This blanket, this torn useless piece of wool.
My grandfather sad it keep him warm and safe.
He was shorter than I. "
That's a wonderful metaphor..it puts a vivid image in the readers mind. |
