Of Want & Need (Somewhere In This World)

Lifepoems
|
I persistently ponder time, its value
and its torments, and philosophize
about space and spirituality,
as if my very life depended on right-thinking
(as another precious child starves to death
somewhere in this world).
I struggle to reconcile my existence,
aching for unnamable things, certain
that there is life-altering meaning in this
inexplicable longing (as yet another
beautiful soul is tragically murdered
somewhere in this world).
I wail as intensely as a lost child
for having turned some corner in my mind
only to discover myself seemingly-alone
(as someone waits for a loved one
to return home from a dreadful war
somewhere in this world).
Pathetically idle and selfishly wanting,
I look past the everything-I-have, seeing
only a vision of what-else-I-desire
(as another heart shatters for having
been exposed to an unbearable pain
somewhere in this world).
~
And somewhere…
a gun is pointed,
a dream’s denied,
another being goes deaf or blind
purity is stolen
a breaking point's reached
another evil act’s unleashed
a disease’s contracted
a victim’s cries unheard
a deadly accident occurs
a bomb is dropped
a spirit breaks in two
more innocent fall to the cruel
a mind’s erased
a basic need’s unmet
a child is told to just forget
confidence’s shattered
the not guilty blamed
a life will never be the same
a cure’s elusive
a child’s born too soon
someone’s saying words that wound
discrimination lives
hope's been set aside
a future's lost to genocide
a chance is missed
the earth is flawed
someone kills in the name of God
a plot is hatched
the greedy rule
another child’s harassed at school
a scar is left
nightmares begin
a loved one’s life comes to an end
a habit’s formed
a man beats his wife
another soul gives up on life
a bomb is dropped
a position's abused
the verdict’s read for the accused
a heart is broken, a shelter lost
and someone pays the ultimate cost...
for what I have (not what I want)
and I can’t even bear confront
the truth that every single day
all these horrid things take place
(as I sit selfishly wanting more)
somewhere in this world.
Counting blessings
and saying prayers,
~Snem

With tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat, oh my god, this poem touched me in more ways than I can possibly explain. You have definitely said a whole hell of a lot here without holding back and ended it with a most positive way.
Skillfully penned masterpiece.
I so badly want to rush to the best poem of the day thread but I believe most people here already know that and I know those can be awkward moments for you.
Oh forget it, it must be done. ;-) If only you didn't write those best poems of the day type poems then maybe I could avoid this.

Hey Snem,
a well constructed and intensely emotional examination of the seeming dichotomy bw our own self-centred needs and wants and the myriad of pain and tragedy in the world. Individualism and our innately limited empathy allows a lot of human-feuled injustice and deprivation to continue. All we can do is down size our own wants and needs, make the small changes in in our immediate environment and pay it forward.

Snem,
Your poetry always reaches deep inside my soul. This one made me cry. Your talent and depth of emotion are second to none and you captured each emotion so tenderly and vividly I felt it all coming through. I bow to your poetic talent dear heart!! Bravo!

I'll be honest ... I wish I had written this.
The change in the middle ...the return to the beginning format ... the repitition ... not atypical of what I have seen of you in the past. Much growth shows here. Much admiration for this ... and you.

Chris, (I need to use that name here)
Global/national awareness begets much sadness and discord in our hearts ..
I want to echo the sentiments of everyone who came before me and add this:
that you, could find it within, to write from the very depth of your heart and soul, such
sentiments .. that speak of a desperate and innate need to quell suffering .. to exact
a rightness in the world .. to selflessly bid adieu to wants and desires in a search for
some way to move hearts into performing kinder acts .. has left me somewhat mute.
This has to be the most altruistic and potent piece I've ever, EVER read. Truly. But, knowing
you the way I do .. I am not at all surprised. It is exceptional, not only for it's message, but
for the inspiration and provocation it prompts.
Exquisitely perfect. In every way.
*hugs*

I liked, I liked it a lot. Did you? Did you feel good/bad or indifferent? Was it cleansing? Do you search for these things?
I will read more of your work. I am interested.
Sorry I am not as lengthy as those who came before me. I did enjoy this work.
Thank you

Yes perspective is a good word. I found a lot of perspective in this highly charged and emotional piece. The imagery is powerful, and the message sobering and sad....at least for me. The creative style and format were very effective Your creativity hever ceases to imprerss me. I learn a lot from reading your poetry.
Keep on, keeping on Snemmy

OMG Snem, This is me, somethings that go through my twisted mind on a daily basis. I feel bad for myself and then only have to think of others trying desperately to live another day. Damn, this was so moving. I think this is one of my favorites. Absolutely touching piece. You are one hec of a woman and writer, Snem. Glad to be able to read your treasured words, that leave me in awe of you.
Peace and hugs,

I am floored - as if you wrote that for me! As the Prophet said, all is vanity, toiling for the wind. What a sobering contrast you express between what we have, what we yearn for, what we really need, and the true needs of countless other suffering souls. |

ah perspective...... It irritates me no end when I see people that continually don't look at how good they actually have it.
And yet just because I think about it, appriciate it even, does that make me any better for not doing something about it?
Eye Opening.
(Oh did you mean to say " a bomb is dropped " twice? ...I need to think on that... :) ) |
