NINEVAH or SODOM

Contributed by Lionel on Wednesday, 16th August 2006 @ 03:04:56 PM in AEST
Topic: Nostalgic

I saw a movie the other day,
made back in fifty seven:
This was when I was very young,
not much more than eleven.

The setting was a New England town,
and It was considered obscene at the time.
A romantic story called Peyton Place -
with no profanity, no nudity, and little crime.

As I watched, I began to think:
"My God" how far we've gone,
from opinion then, to opinion now, -
Have our hearts turned into stone?

It has been a mere fifty years,
this sobering contrast with the past.
How swift our journey to the sewer:
Will God's judjment come as fast?

It seems we've lost all restraint,
nothing is condemned as taboo.
Was the hippie era such a shock
that no kind of filth seems askew?

Can we hope for that rare repentence,
as ancient Ninevah realized:
or, have we lost all sense of decency,
which resulted in Sodom's demise?

**************
Jonah3:10 - "they turned from their wicked
ways, and the Lord spared Ninevah.
Genesis19:24 - the Lord rained fire
upon Sodom.

Lionel

Oh Lionel this splendid work brings tears to my eyes. You have an inkling of my past from postings, and can imagine what our childhood was. Yes, there was repentence when grave transgression occurred, it is no longer so, soul doctors (psychiatrists) tell you there is no sin.
But worst of all - it is the manipulation of perception that has gone down over the years, and perception is everything.- when it is brought low , then you see the masses howling like wolfes, not against the aggressor, but the victim. A perverted picture of reality. Can call it diabolical.
Oh your poem makes me cry- ears,- so beautiful and sadly truthful.
Be blessed
Elizabeth
Marvellous poem Lionel.

Hi Lionel,

an easy to read piece with an engaging historical and moral aspect. I recently again watched Rebel Without a Cause and thought how the rebellious aspect - once considered shocking and over the top -now seems so tame and ludicrous. Although its the same message of teen angst, alienation, peer acceptance and self struggle being played out in each generation, this generation's version is with guns and sex and crystal meth - not switch blades, a little alcohol and chicken runs!
Humanity seems fairly resistent to this kind of toxicity; empires rise and fall, values and standards swing back and forth - it's not always a one-way track. Corruption of the spirit is the giveway for inevitible demise, and the world is still overwhelmingly religious. Still, you wonder how far things can degrade before people scream enough is enough. Anyway, thanks for posting (and now you've gone and given away your age!)

Spike

"How swift our journey to the sewer"...

What a great line to sum up the message in this call to arms of sorts. Nice writing!
