HAYAN AND SCHMUEL, DINA AND MARIA

Contributed by steeleyes on Thursday, 3rd August 2006 @ 05:55:11 PM in AEST
Topic: war

From high up the Israeli pilot looks down
Schmuel doesn’t understand except to do as he is told
He does not see humans down there
In the screen they’re pale-white, already cold

Tiny Hayan looks up to the morning sky
He doesn’t understand a thing of a distant strife
In his gorgeous brown and twinkling eye
It’s just another day of his beautiful life

Maria and Dima are such good, close friends
from when they were little girls
Today they share a coffee in the square
with bright ribbons round their curls

Slowly the air seems other,
some vibration hits
Confused faces, knitted brows,
a tension in the wits

Suddenly the stomach tightens,
tingling the body round
In an instant there’s blood and concrete
and a mind-splitting, searing sound

Evil pulses dance in the tormented air
Blast follows blast, scream on scream
A blanket of particles scorches each pore
Peals of grief rent in a soundless dream

It's the sound of all hell breaking free
And bursting from the ground
As corpses and pieces now emerge
Lying all around

Schmuel hears nothing
but that same old shushing sound
His payload he dropped as ordered
Now another target's found

He has time to dream awhile
about the clouds and his love at home
and about that special coffee
they'll share when they’re alone

This is his job and he does it,
believing what he’s told
He must do this to protect his land,
it's the thought which makes him bold

At least this is what he repeats
when awkward thoughts appear
He’s not an evil boy, he's sweet and young
and he too feels some fear

Down in the town little Hayan
watches Schmuel’s tailfins arc and go
He too had a dream to be a pilot
in some circus aerial show

His great love is circus, the trapeze artists
and the clowns
Now he lies bleeding in the swirling dust
in an air devoid of sounds

Slowly, slowly his ears detect
the beginnings of murmerings
It’s strange this sensation,
that with it terror brings

For suddenly the silence
becomes a terrifying roar
Men and women screaming
and he begins to feel so sore

Maria and Dina stagger,
dresses rent and bloody now
their faces white as ghosts
and the tears that pour and pour

They reach our Hayan somehow
Dina feels his tiny wrist
Then slowly looks to Maria
And to the sky she shakes a fist

Strong anti-war poetry, very emotional and evenly considered. Your first person perpectives were powerful and humanising in what has been presented by the media asa dehumanised and distant tragedy. As this 'conflict' so clearly shows, it is always civilians who make up the majority of the body count. Most countries have special ops to fight extremist groups, so there is no rationale for wide-scale bombing of children and unarmed men and women, unless you are trying to make a point. Israel understands that they cannot extinguish Hezbollah's passion, but they can destroy the country that supports it. It's interesting- and concerning- no one else has commented on your post,so I thought I would be the first. Hopefully more will follow.

Excellent write. Sorry, I didn't see this sooner. Made me cry. Why can we not see, that war is not the answer. Never was, never will be. Thanks for sharing this very touching write.
Peace, Laura
