Sitting opposite you in Starbucks,
In comfy, reproduced old-fashioned chairs,
Drinking latte and mocha,
As we discuss our lives,
We haven’t met up in awhile,
And we’ve both missed this,
The careless chat that falls effortlessly between us,
Which was once a regular event,
But now only occurs when we’ve both got the time,
Busy, busy, busy,
This grown up world
In which we find ourselves,
The discussion falls to men,
Both of us searching in vain for the ‘one’,
But only seeming able to find the,
‘one who is not the one, but will do for now’,
Our eyes settle on people passing by,
And we make up stories about them,
A familiar game, one we’ve played often,
Sitting in this very same spot,
Life is a blur of dinner parties,
Lunch with people we dislike,
But spend time with anyway,
In order to further our careers,
And thinking about this,
I wonder when it was that we both became adults,
Sometime between College, University,
And the nine to five,
How did I miss it?
The pessimism,
The rent, the gas bill,
All of them should have been hints, surely?
But no, I thought I was still the student,
Still the loudmouth, the funny one,
With nothing to worry about except
The thesis on the bedroom table,
It’s then that I realise;
I’ve not changed, my circumstances have,
A thought, that for some reason,
Makes me rather sad.
