Highland Walk

The frosty morning embraces me,
It’s kiss as cold as the long dead lover,
Now I only walk in shadows,
These days the light just doesn’t feel right,
The warmth that once spread through my limbs,
Taking me to the same places we once went,
Hand in hand, arm in arm;
But that was long ago,
Memories haunt these once green fields,
And the wind stops in its tracks,
As though nothing living, nothing pure,
Could ever enter here again; now that we’ve gone,
The smell of fire entrances me,
And I follow it, to its origin,
A blank spot of land,
On another grassy bank,
And there we sit,
Face to face with my past,
Watching as a young girl laughs,
And the boy at her side tells another joke,
Pulls her into a joyful embrace,
Both unaware of the tragedy that life has waiting for them,
I wouldn’t tell them of it, even if I could,
For these moments are the only we’ll ever have, no need to taint them,
They wrap themselves in a blanket,
And I turn my back on them,
For I lived that kiss and all that followed,
Can still taste the tobacco in your smile,
The tears freeze, ice on my cheeks,
I wouldn’t change a thing,
If only time had been on our side,
The things we could have done,
I pass through the streets unaware,
Soon I’m at my door;
It opens to the smell of another man,
The sound of him laughing; not you,
And the sadness that engulfs me is almost more than I can bear,
But as I close the memories behind me,
I’m thankful that I took another highland walk;
With you.

Ah, though this may be a meloncholy recall, and the sadness may be drawn from, as it seems, a "long dead lover", this poem should be in the category of Love Remembered ... of land and lover. Magnificently written and a wonderful read.
