OWN WORST ENEMY

Contributed by lillyjane on Sunday, 23rd July 2006 @ 06:51:31 PM in AEST
Topic: anguished

Own Worst Enemy

What did I do to make you so mad,
why do you always treat me so bad,
Iv'e tried to appease you over the years,
why do you always reduce me to tears,

Well cant you see, its because your so weak,
its easy to make you believe your a freak,
you let me win, dont fulfill your dreams,
its easier that way or so it seems,

its not easy you know, im so full of fear,
just as I get brave, hear you lurking near,
you remind me of things that lie in the past,
shadows that make me so over cast,

well just as your moving forward you see,
I hear your voice calling to me,
you need me to say I approve,
because your a coward frightened to move,

I am the one who holds you back,
I am the confidence that you lack,
I am your conscience, your guilt, your fear,
I am the one who causes your tears,

I am depression, I am regret,
I am the one who wont let you forget,
one more thing, and this you knew,
I am your enemy, I am you...

Mighty fine poem here, Lilly. Every line seems masterfully working, almost in crescendo, to the very last line ... to the worst enemy of us all! With an easy flow of meter and rhyme the reader takes an easy, and thus, enjoyable ride in identifying even the enemy in themselves. Good work.

LillyJane~
My gosh you have penned an incredible write here. One so many of us can relate too. The struggles one faces within themselves. You have dug deep and poured out what I could not. As a sufferer of depression and low self esteem your words expressed exactly what one goes through and the struggles they face everyday. I totally agree, sometimes we are our own worst enemy.
Well done LillyJane~Keep up the great work.
hugs n prayers,
sue m

I like how you almost make it appear like two people. Sometimes it feels like there are two people inside us, arguing and creating indecisiveness.

Yes I can relate to this, here is my answer.

You are your own worst enemy,
As you say and quote,
You put it in prospective,
In the words that you wrote,
But one day this angst will end,
And you will become, your own best friend.

This is a great Poem Lillyjane.......it reminds me of the song "I am Music" Very cleverly done as it took me a few lines to discover
just what you were about to relate.
Enjoyed this very much, and you are so right.
Our worst enemy is ourselves, and with us we have to put up a good fight!
Warm love

Oh, my lillyjane. This was so terribly heartwrenching, for I
feel these words are what so many of us hear from within
more often than not. ..

a very sad write. And you are so very right .. sometimes we ARE
our worst enemy ... keeping us from what might otherwise bring us
ultimate happiness and contentment.

Great post!

How incredibly right you are. We are our own worst enemies and critics.

This is a great poem and I could really feel the emotion in it. Can also relate to it a lot.

I also love the way you put the twist on it as if you were talking to yourself (which I did not realize at first). And I hope you understand I absolutely in no way mean that in a bad way. Quite in fact, I love the way it is written and often find myself talking to myself like this; whether verbally or within my own thoughts. I think it's a very natural thing for people to do and I love the way you put that perspective on it.

Also find myself agreeing with jerseysue. You have a great friend there.

Take care.

Tim
