LETTER FROM A FARM KID

(San Diego Marine Corps Recruit Training)

LETTER FROM A FARM KID

Dear Ma and Pa,

I'm well and hope you are.
Please tell bro Walt and Elmer
the Marine Corps beats working for old man
Minch it's a savior!
Tell them to join up quick before
all the places are filled.
It took a while to adjust because
you get to sleep in till 6 a.m.
before drilled.
But I'm getting so I like to sleep late.
All you have to do before breakfast
is smooth your cot, and shine things.
No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix
wood to split, none of those doings.

Men got to shave, but it's not so bad.
There's running warm water, makes
you glad.
Breakfast is strong on
trimmings fruit juice, cereal, eggs,
bacon, but kind of weak on chops.
Miss potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant,
pie and other regular food that hops.
Tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit
by two city boys who live on coffee
Their food plus yours hold you 'til
noon comfy and cheaply.

It's no wonder city boys can't march much.
A route march is about as far as to
our mailbox at home easy touch.
City boys get tired and their feet get sore,
So they load us all up in trucks,
what a bore!
The country is nice but awful flat.
Sergeant is like our school teacher
used to be......screeches like a bobcat.
Our captain is like the school board,
and Majors and Colonels just ride around
frowns they don't hoard!
They don't bother you none....

This next will kill Walt and Elmer
with laughing for this action.
I keep getting medals for shooting.
I can't figure it our either?
The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk
head and don't move like an anchor,
It's easy it ain't shooting at you like
the Higgett boys at home.
All you got to do is lie there all
comfortable, no movin' n'er roam.
You don't even load your own cartridges
'cause they come in boxes.
Then there's the hand-to-hand
combat like wrestling wiry foxes.
Not as fast though, those city boys
are pretty slow.
You have to be real careful though
they break real easy!
It's not like wrestling with the ole bull
back home daily,

I'm 'bout the best they got in this
Except for Jug Jordan from over
at Silver Lake, he I can't dismiss
I've only beat him once, he joined up the
same time as me.
I'm only 5'6" and 130 pounds and
He's 6' 8" and near 300 pounds dry
and kinda blocky
Be sure and tell Walt and Elmer to hurry
and join up
Before all our neighbors hear about this
setup and showup!
Then the stampede would be even bigger!

Your loving daughter,
Carol

This was sent to me in an email
I just couldn't resist!
The poem is mine.
