EMPATHY

EMPATHY

This sweet story begins in a third
grade classroom
A nine year old seated at his desk and all
of sudden.........doom!
A puddle between his feet and his pants
are wet!!!!
His heart stops, how could this have
happened did I forget?

When the boys find out, he'll never
hear the end of it!
And the girls? They'll laugh
and from me they'll split!
"Dear God," he prays, "This is
an emergency!
I need your help now or in five
minutes it's going to be ugly!"
After praying he looks up and here
comes his teacher
He can see in her eyes, she's
going to want an answer!

At that very moment here
comes Susie....
Carrying a goldfish bowl full
of water gently
She trips in front of the teacher and the
fish bowl lands in his lap!
He pretends to be angry as if
Susie had landed a slap!

To himself he says, "Thank you
Lord thank you!"
He's suddenly become the object
of sympathy too.
And as life will go, Susie
is suddenly ridiculed
"Go away Klutz!" they tell her,
their love for her has cooled!

The teacher whisked him to
the basement
For a gym suit as a dry replacement
He is enjoying all the sympathy
they pour upon him.
He's so thankful his accident's
not so grim.

Finally at the end of the day
he bids all adieu..
To Susie he whispers,
"You did that on purpose didn't you?"
Little Susie's eyes are kind and
filled with comfort too...
She replies, "I wet my pants
once too!"
She added, "I could feel what you
felt, it was a rescue."

When you find someone that has
"wet his pants," can you empathize?
Feel his pain or humiliation
as his heart cries?
Or do you rub his nose in it, and n'er
let him forget?
We all "wet our pants" and
showing empathy for others
we'll ne'r know regret!

This was a email sent to me
by my dear friend "Stitch"
the poem is mine

"Some people think only intellect counts: knowing how
to solve problems, knowing how to get by, knowing how
to identify an advantage and seize it. But the functions
of intellect are insufficient without courage, love,
friendship, compassion and empathy!"

Absoutely awesome, ConSue. You are soooooo correct.

And the quote by Dean Koontz! I am so glad you added that. This poem, that quote, make me think of a myriad of things, one of which I even read here tonight. "But the functions of intellect are insufficient without courage, love, friendship, compassion and empathy!"

How true.

I'll PM you the rest of that myriad. ;-)

Thanks for writing and posting this.

Tim

Only you CoSue could write something drawing such empathy from the reader on a subject so touchy.
Well done!

Such a lovely poem and message. If only the world's heart
could be as gentle and kind as that little girls ..

Thank you for posting this. The sentiment is ever so
beautiful and the quote ... very wise indeed!!
