Brothers

Contributed by Ceres on Monday, 17th July 2006 @ 12:47:28 AM in AEST
Topic: LoveRemembered

I had once loved a clone,
a man who could make the stars shine brighter
with just a simple smile
or make the sea seem dull
with just a glance from his sapphire eyes.
But the other man,
his twin,
was quite the opposite.
There was no warming smile from him,
only a snarl that could break a man's legs,
and a glare that could give a child his worst nightmares.
The man I had loved
was actually gone quite often,
many days and nights in a row,
and he must have asked his brother to keep me company
on each occasion,
because when my love disappeared,
for I never did see him actually walk out the door,
he would appear so suddenly
it was as if he had been there always.
He would snarl and glare
and do many other things my beloved would never have done.
When he came back from his trips
I never complained.
I was worried that he would think I told lies
and when asked about the bruises on my arms,
I would calmly reply,
"Oh, clumsy me, I fell down the stairs!"
or
"A man was running down the street today and bumped into me before I could move."
One day, my love left and didn't come back.
After awhile, I began to think that it was odd
for him to ask his brother to keep me company for such a long time,
but I didn't say anything because it would sound somewhat rude.
Then he himself was gone for a few days and I became rather worried.
He only left when his twin was home with me.
Did that mean something had happened to him?
When the Opposite,
for that is what I call him in my head,
came back,
I was so confused and scared
that I just rambled on with questions.
He was carrying a rather large bottle of amber-colored liquid
I'd noticed many times in his presence,
and suddenly he swung it towards me.
I heard a shriek just before everything became dark.
It was only after I had awoke that I realized the sound had come from my own throat.
After that, I never saw either clone again,
except in pictures quietly hiding in my room.
I often thought of my love,
as I am thinking now,
and wished for his safe return,
though it would be best if he didn't bring the Opposite when he did.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
