Hello

Topic: LovePoetry

In the moment that my eyes met his, I thought of you,
Arms folded, leaning back, eyebrows raised, strange, don’t you think?
I tried with all my strength to remove your image from my mind,
Relax, enjoy the music, the laughter, the drink.

But it all seemed to wash over me,
My heart just wasn’t there,
And when he smiled, or told a joke,
I couldn’t bring myself to care.

I wondered where you were,
At that exact moment in time,
And you seemed so far away from me;
The mountain I’ll never climb.

He offered to walk me home,
But I declined, with a smile,
Despite such a disastrous date,
We’d been friends for awhile.

As I climbed my stairwell,
I thought of the night you’d shared my bed,
Each glance and tender touch,
The loving things you’d said.

I got myself to thinking,
About why we’d never work,
Why you’d cause nothing but anger,
Nothing but pain and hurt.

I realised in that moment, that you wouldn’t;
It was your fear,
That kept you from loving me,
It was the reason you weren’t here.

So I’ve picked up the phone,
I’m dialling the number I know by heart,
And I’m trying to find the words,
Find the right place to start.

As I’m trying to sort it out,
How to tell you things you already know,
I hear your voice from the other end,
It says, simply, “Hello”.

I love this poem, and the ending. It leaves us with a sense of mystery . We can make our assumptions of what happened next. Captivating, well written piece. Sue x
