Smoke and Mirrors

Contributed by Man_On_High on Saturday, 8th July 2006 @ 11:51:49 PM in AEST
Topic: ApologyPoetry

He loathes in kind with a deepbellied moan of sad hilarity
his Gorgon soul and cherub face
soaring into view over an amber dream
and opposite him in the bleak moment
he chews on deserted thoughts
simultaneously mouthing parables and paradoxes
the pure plentitudes of all his pleasure.

Hallowed profanities swirl in his mind like incense
and his face shines in the smoke.. a melancholy moon
an evening reflection of set stars and early rainclouds
a warrior of words on the last battlefield:
brave untamed and untimid.. raising the flag
trampling forth towards a predetermined destiny
with a true and tired truculence.

Self preservation born in a literary 'den of iniquity'
and all his burning, blackbird heart.
Sitting sweetly and crooked on the throne of Apathy
pulverising any and all quick serendipitous felicity
celebrating fantasies of a hundred heroic orgies
written steadfast with a gentle garrolous Godspeed
set and proper - his final come-uppance..

now longdead, that decent decadent man~
..final days forever his.

From a dark watchtower he's blind in exile..
assuming consummation of a life devoutly wished for-
charred in smoke and burning unrighteous in the flames of reason.
Homeward bound.. a naive native - dying
unabsolved by a tumultuous rite of years.

Geez Billy...I often feel like I don't have anything adequate to say when commenting on your work! You seem to continuously grow with each piece, and often each line leaves a lingering effect, because they tend to be THAT potent, and well put-together. The first line alone is enough to draw the reader in, but the ensuing ones surely keep the reader lingering long after the final line is read...Well done!

Scorp.

There is an abundance of substance in here, dear Billy. Overflowing in fact, even though it may seem somewhat abstract in part. I know, through all the genius in all the words, that it is magnificently heartfelt.

I have oftimes wondered, exactly which is worse– apathy or impatience.. Ultimately they are both rooted in fear. And still, the power ever and always lies within us to dismiss it at will. But, I know all too well, this is a lot easier said than done. [liquid courage is so painfully fleeting] There are far more safe havens in familiarity; ones which we cling to and have come to trust to protect us, even though we can see, (oh god, we can SEE), our own desires being manifested just ahead.. It is the unknown that tears us down and refuses to let the strength within guide us. I feel that sometimes it is just the understanding, (and this does not even mean fully knowing the reasons why), of another, that truly helps us to overcome.

“And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission
to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
~ marianne williamson

The love, understanding and just the emotional nearness of someone who truly cares about our well being, can deliver so much more strength than we thought we ever had.

Amazing depth here. You are far more brave than you realize. In today’s society, it seems death is less feared than being alive. To express yourself as you truly are ... now THAT is living. And that is definitely brave.

xo

Billy~
Over the months I have watched your poetry grow, develope & reach new heights. You are a very remarkable and gifted poet .
Your poems have always spoken to me and moved me in many ways. Keeping in mind that each verse is ur voice. We write to try to make sense of this world, of a heart that feels the effects of every moment in life or of maybe a memory that is trying to surface.
Nonetheless, you give many forms of expression through ur writings.
Sheer talent displayed before us. Well done dearest Billy~
Love from ur fan/friend,
sue m

Ah, poet... it would, I suspect, probably not surprise you in the least if I were to confess that I feel a sense of familiarity while lingering here on this page. The affliction described here, this curse that has befallen not terrible many, but specifically and only -

a warrior of words on the last battlefield:
brave untamed and untimid.. raising the flag
trampling forth towards a predetermined destiny
with a true and tired truculence.

... is not altogether foreign to this reader. It is, in my most honest opinion, never to be taken lightly and often difficult to describe (and/or to live with, really)... it is exclusive and elusive, but not entirely - for the similarly cursed might understand. Even more remarkably, the afflicted might one day happen discover, in another, a cure. And ah! what a fine, fine medicine that is! (Trust me here... one could easily and oh so willingly overdose!!!)
